The city of Spittal an der Drau is located in the northern Carinthia. It lies on the Drava Valley, between the river Drava and the river Lieser. The city is surrounded by mountains, of which the nearest is Goldeck, and is located at 5 kilometres from the Lake Millstätter See. Spittal is a cultural and commercial center of the upper Carinthia, also known for its cultural activities, including the famous international choral contest at the Porcia’s castle.
The city is also an important turistic place, with 70.000 stays per year. Water has a fundamental value for the city of Spittal, both as a turistic element (swimming pool by the Lake Millstätter See, bicycle paths along the river Drava and the lake), both as a economic (drinking water from the sources) and ecological factor (revitalization areas, marshes, lawns and ponds along the Drava). The water was the central theme of a six years exhibition in Spittal and in the whole Carinthia: “Kärnten wasserreich” (“Carinthia – rich of water”) .
Municipality of Spittal an der Drau is town twinned with :
- Porcia municipality (Italy) since 1987;
The municipality of Spittal an der Drau participated with a project in the Porcia’s castle and at the Lake “Egelsee”. The two projects were implemented in 2008 and supported by the regional government of Carinthia. The first was a touristic project, whilst the second one was ecological oriented.
